Pingo EZ Dial is a Windows Mobile App for people who call international number. While the app itself is free you need to purchase calling credit to call international numbers. We have been running their affiliate program on the sidebar of our site for a week or so and were recently provided with a free $20 credit to review the app. I don’t make a lot of international calls so I got a friend of mine to review the app. He used a VOIP app called PennyTel ( from his iphone ) for his international call needs. Pingo EZ Dial is not like other VOIP app you use. Instead of routing your calls through WiFi or 3G, the app calls a 1800 number and the call is then connected through this call ( think of how a calling card works ). So in short this App is a Calling Card for Windows Mobile user.

The installation of the app requires you to signup to their service. Once the signup is complete you will be sent a link to your mobile phone and you can download and install the application from this link.

Run the app from the installed programs list and you can configure the app. Once minimized the app runs in the background and places a logo of Pingo in your task bar on the Home Screen. Now when you place a call to an international number from your contacts or if you try to type in and make an international call Pingo EZ Dial detects this calls and launches its interface where it automatically dials the 1800 number required to place the call. Then you are asked to enter your passcode through an IVR ( this step can be eliminated if you have selected the PINpass option BOTH in your phone and also setup on the pingo website ). Now the pingo interface quits and shows you the default Windows Mobile dialer screen. ( till this point of time you have no option to activate the speaker phone, I would have preferred to have the inbuilt speaker on when I have to listen to the IVR ) But once the WM dialer is up you can switch to the inbuilt speak if you wish.

Now the call is connected. The call quality was brilliant. It was better than the quality of call on PennyTel ( mind you PennyTel call quality is no way bad but when compared I would pick Pingo’s quality over the other ). It was as good as a normal voice call from my mobile phone. I made around 6-7 calls and one of the time the call was not very clear so I disconnected the call and tried again and then it was fine. ( Not sure whose fault it was the network provider or Pingo’s routed call ). The receivers of the call also confirmed that the call quality was excellent. One other advantage I see with this app is you dont have to be on WiFi or 3G to make a call, as long as you can make any calls on your device you call call out using the Pingo rates for international calls. When I got an incoming call when I was on an international call on Pingo EZ Dial I had the option to place the call on hold and take the new call. ( This will depend on your carrier and device, if they give you this option on normal calls this will work for you )

Now the negative points. In Australia 1800 number from mobile phones are not free, so your calls will have an extra charge , though we cant blame Pingo for this, it is something you have to consider before switching to Pingo. We have to manually enter the number when placing the call even though you dial the number from your contact list. ( there is a Speed Dial option you can setup to setup frequently called numbers )

Overall if you can get cheap/free calls to 1800 numbers from your mobile provider then the competitive rates offered by Pingo can save you heaps while calling overseas from your Mobile device. As for me I live in Melbourne and the call rates for 1800 number from my mobile are far too expensive for me to see this as a better alternative to the VOIP app I currently use.
