SlideIT 3.1.0.1 – innovative way to input text, no more typing just slide across it
With most new devices the manufactures add their own custom keyboard because the default Windows Mobile software keyboard is horrible. Most of these add a finger friendly keyboard but the guys from MobileTextInput.com has introduced a new way to enter information on your phone. ( I have seen a video – maybe on youtube – a few months ago which said this technology was going to come to all hand-held devices , but don’t think any such apps came out for Windows Mobile )
With this app you don’t have to type each letter of the word you want to enter, just slide your finger across the word and voilà the text appears. Its definitely much more fun and easier to add text this way and the learning curve is not that steep. Just tap on the letters of the first word and then slide across the other letters without lifting your finger, ignore the double letters next to each other. Check out the video which should give you guys the basic idea of how this app works.
Some of the Features of the app :
- Finger Friendly
- Easy and Fun way to input data
- Graffiti Mode ( for Numbers and Symbols )
- Add frequently used phrases as Shortcut text
- Add new words to dictionary
- Support for multiple languages
The app also gives you an option to add text as a normal keyboard. To invoke this option click on 12@ and select ABC from the menu. This can be useful while entering new words in to the dictionary. Adding a new word to the dictionary is easy just select the word you want to add and hit [ + ]. You can also add multiple new words into the dictionary, by selecting the different words separated by a line break. Its also a breeze to add urls/email address using SlideIT say you want to add www.google.com, first you add the text www.google.com to the dictionary and then each time you slide across wgoglecom ( you can ignore period and double letters ) the url is added.
With SlideIT sliding across a word doesn’t always yield the desired result, that is why the app shows you possible words on top of the keyboard, Its color coded so you can easily identify them. The one is blue is the word that’s currently selected if thats not what you wanted to add just slide across the other possible selection. The ones in green are the Shortcut text, which is another cool feature. When you tap on the shortcut text the words corresponding to the shortcut gets displayed in the editor. You guys might want to check out the user manual for more detail : User Manual SlideIT [ PDF ]
I did run in to some trouble with the app too. For example when I wanted to add a word ” Muggles ” the app would not let me, even while the auto prediction was off. The word kept changing to ” Muffled “, I could add Muggle but as soon as I added the “s” it kept changing back to Muffled. Another annoying thing was the inability to switch CAPS on in the middle of a word. Say you wanted to type in iPhone , I couldn’t find a way to switch CAPS on after the first letter is entered. Another limitation is that the Graffiti mode only supports numbers and a limited number of symbols.
To conclude I can say that if you don’t have a hardware keyboard then you might want to consider investing in this app, coz its a great way to enter data. And once you get used to the app you should be able to enter whatever you want with ease, having said that I wouldn’t prefer this over the hardware keyboard on my device.
