Zoomboard 2.04 – VITO’s take on the software keyboard for Windows Mobile
iWindowsMobile Communication Suite Goodie Bag : Take a seat folks, ‘cuz this is in fact a review series of many products not one. A Mobile Shell UI, a contact manager, an SMS application, an SIP and throw in a weather manager for good measure – WHEW quite the mouthful.
Zoomboard 2.04 – software keyboard for windows mobile
Another app that bundles with the suite is the Zoomboard. This is a phone SIP that works towards reducing errors in two ways.
- It displays the letter pressed in a zommed in mode so that its clearly visible.
- It registers the key press only after the key is released rather than when it is pressed.
As far as settings go, there are a few that we liked. The app lets you set this one as the default one and we don’t need any SIP change routine for that. This is achieved with the “default” option. The zoom works in two ways – “smart” and normal. The smart mode determines if the zoom displays without a delay.
There are a bunch of languages to choose from for the app and a few zoom types. There is the Full zoom that fills up the entire SIP area with the letters. The Glass zoom is a semi-transparent nice looking zoom option. The Float option moves the zoom window along with the letter being pressed and un-checking this one keeps the zoom window stationary.
The app comes in three different skins – dark, bright and clear. There isn’t much difference between the bright and clear ones but the dark one is pretty neat.
As SIPs go this one is pretty OK as long as you have not been spoilt by the likes of FingerKeyboard or Swype
. Compared to those, zoomboard isn’t too functional an option. Consider that fingerkeyboard is free it makes zoomboard lesser of an preference. It does not have support for inbuilt text, continuous keypresses or smileys. It doesn’t have as many skins and isn’t as configurable. Typing is definitely less erroneous but slower than on Fingerkeyboard owing to the fact that key-presses are only recorded on releasing the key.
Again this is not an app I would recommend for $9.95 but when the whole Communication Suite is thrown in for under $25 it does sound like a great deal.
