uCONVERT 2.2.98 – easily one of the best windows mobile unit and currency converter
uCONVERT is a powerful unit and currency converter for Windows Mobile devices. It runs on older 6.1, 6.5 and the newest 6.5.5 OS version. All common resolutions like WVGA or VGA are supported. The developer himself describes his work with following words: “uCONVERT is designed to make any unit or currency conversion quick and easy, yet at the same time fits in a number of powerful features”. Read on to find out what we think about it. ( the title is a dead giveaway
)

uCONVERT
In the beautiful and intuitive touch interface the application includes more than 200 Units distributed over 19 categories. It would take too much time and too much space to enumerate all of them. The most important for you could be the categories like computer, energy, speed, weight, etc. If you don’t use all of the units and don’t want to waste time on scrolling and searching for them, you are able to add some of the units to the favorites. The application creates a new favorite-category on the top of the list, so you have a very quick launch to the important units. Also uCONVERT offers you a very extensive currency converter with more than 60 currencies with daily exchange rate updates. We didn’t test all the units for accuracy of data but we did come across a bug : ARS ( Argentine peso ) was labeled as Australian Dollar and so was AUD. ( image in screenshot galley ). It would be nice to have a visual indication when the exchange rate were last updated.
Here are the list of units available via the app :
The UI is quite similar to the iPhone’s date and time picker. The main 2 columns contain the units that can be converted within a specific category which can be selected by a scrollable list to the right. The apps gives the user the option to mirror image the UI which will be a lot easier to use if you are left handed. Major props to the developer for this simple but a very handy option. One other thing I liked about the app is that I could easily swap units from the menu option, or you can just slide your finger across from left to right and the units are swapped.
In the options menu you can select between 10 languages and the developer promises “new languages are being added all the time”. The Price for the full version is only $0.99. If you don’t need the favorites and the currency converter you can use the free version of uCONVERT, this one includes all the rest of the categories and units. The application updates are free when you purchase uCONVERT.
If you want to upgrade to the current version of uCONVERT (v.2.3.0), you should take a look at some important information about the upgrading. Also the developer created a changelog for the new release. Find more information at: http://uconvert.us/2010/02/upgrading-uconvert-230/
If you install uCONVERT the first time it could be that it does not run without Adobe Flash Lite, you can download it at Adobe Homepage or the devs have added it here:

Finally , apart from a few bugs we came across ( which we hope the dev will fix soon ), I can recommend uCONVERT for all. I think all of us need to convert some units in the daily life. This application can be very useful for all. It has a great interface, intuitive touch control and is very favorable.

Developers Response :
I’ll correct the Argentine Peso issue later today. Also we’re releasing another update towards the end of this month, changes should include:
- Choose top 3 categories rather than just one
- Units sorted alphabetically
- The last time the exchange rates are updated will be displayed in the settings screen (and perhaps the popup menu)
- Turkish, Swedish, Polish and Chinese languages
- A few new units
- Alternate right handed layout (same as left handed layout but with category icons on right)

Why would one need vibration option in a converter app?
this app could be very useful for me.
Hmm looks a lot like a particualar an iPhone App… While I think taking inspiration from others is good, a direct copy is probably not…
It’s a good effort just isn’t as polished as an Iphone app.
